Zombie Cliche Lookout:
One of the things that makes zombies scary is that there’s just no way to parse out their motivation and use it against them. You can’t, for instance, connect their need to feast of the flesh of the living with some childhood abandonment issue and weasel your way out of cannibalization by helping the zombie come to terms with themselves as a (former) person. A zombie’s motivation is, by design, very shallow: they eat the living. There’s no reasoning, or delaying, or diverting them from that course.

Well, other than smashing up their brains real good. That seems to work.
