Ranma 1/2! My favorite Anime series...at least it's the series that I have the most videos, comics, and toys from!

Ranma toys haven't made it to "mainstream" US distribution yet. Maybe "Pokemon" will pull us kicking and screaming into the world market. Maybe not.

In either case, the popularity of this show overseas has lead to the creation of some nifty little toys, and from there it's just a short back-alley skip-and-jump to BOOTLEGS!

The Front

This particular bootleg comes blistered to a dual-sided backer. The cardboard is nice and heavy, the graphics bright and colorful. But there's no manufacturer logo, and all of the images could have been lifted from clip art.

There are three figures attached to the card, and one stand for them to share.

From left to right we have Boy-Type Ranma, P-Chan, and Ukiou.

At least, it's supposed to be Ukiou. If you look at the logo in the upper right corner, you can see the color scheme this figure is SUPPOSED to have. Her lovely auburn tresses have been replaced with a glossy yellow, and the outfit is all wrong.

The Back

P-Chan also has some problems. His snout is purple instead of pink and the pattern on the bandanna is incorrect.

Ranma, at least, looks like he should.

The back of the card shows just how you're supposed to use that little star-thingie at the bottom of the blister. It will work with Ranma, but P-Chan will just have to stand on his own.....

The figures appear to be lifted directly from Japanese keychains. At least two "real" series have been copied for this package, as Ukiou is from a later assortment.

Update 8/5/99

Next we have a second assortment of 3 figures...and this time I have photos of two of the Keychains they are based on!

2nd 3Pack assortment

From left to right we have Girl-Type Ranma, Genma-Panda, and Ryoga.

The packaging is idential to the first assortment, but the stand included for the figures is different.

Here's a detail of the Ran-chan figurine, next to her "legit" keychain counterpart.

Bootleg Real Item

As you can see, the figures are pretty much identical. The scaling in the photos above is a bit off, as I wanted to include the keychain tags, but the figures are exactly the same size.

Finally, here's a scan of the Genma-Panda keychain. Once again, you'll notice that it is identical in size, shape, and coloration to the bootleg carded above.

Genma-Panda Legal Keychain

Thanks to Anna and Anne for the help in getting the Ranma 1/2 reviews into shape!
