Class of Bootleg Class 1 - Exact Duplicate
Class Notes: Mixing of assortments, but still all Spawn figures under the Spawn name
Bootleg Source: McFarlane Toy's Spawn Figures
Bootleg Rating: StarStarStarStar (Four out of five stars)
Sightings:Australia
Vintage:1998

This is quite possibly the last line of duplicated Spawn figures we'll see. As described in the Curse of the Spawn review, McFarlane is very security-concious when it comes to his toys. Nothing since 1996's Series 5 has been reported. Rumor has it that McFarlane cracked down on the people who made this set, hence the lack of recent copyright infringement.

This set of figures arrived in Australia in early 1998. The figures are on gerneric cardbacs that have the same color pattern as Spawn Series 5 - but without any character information.

The back of the card is essentially the same as the earlier "Curse" backboards, but all of the text has been removed.

The cool "Misfits of Series Seven" lineup is still intact with the inserted Chapel and Pilot Spawn.

Modified Series 7 group photo

Unlike the hefty eight figure line-up seen under the "curse" logo, there are four figures in this assortment. Three of them have surfaced before, one is brand new to this set.

Figure Reviews

Chapel On Card

Chapel

First up we have Chapel. Like the Curse version, he has minty-green face paint and slightly different uniform coloration from the McFarlane version.

The placement of items in the bubble has changed, with the armaments now off to the right.

The accessories are mostly correct, but the back-mounted guns are now in an odd shade of pink.

Commando Spawn On Card

Commando Spawn

Commando Spawn Appears much like his Legal cousin. Addimttedly, there wasn't a whole lot the bootleggers could screw up.

One interesting change is that the gun/missile combo has been fused into a single toy, with the missile "head" just painted a different color. this probably saved the bootleggers a little money in assembly costs.

Nuclear Spawn On Card

Nuclear Spawn

Nuclear Spawn also underwent some cost cutting moves.

His missile-launching acessory has been replaced with a one-piece mockup, and the tubes that once adorned his facemask are long gone.

The painting on this figure is also very sloppy when compared to the curse series.

To make up for these problems, Nuclear Spawn comes with the big-ole-knife that once came with Chapel.

Super Patriot On Card

Super Patriot

The final figure in this set is Super Patriot. The shoulder armor on the left has come loose in the packaging, but I think you get the idea.

The detailing and colors on this figure are good, if not entirely exact matchups with the original.

Super Patriot did NOT appear in the Curse line, which is somewhat odd, as he's a very dynamic figure.
