Star Attack

This is a concept bootleg...mainly of the Star Wars property. The manufacturer went to some trouble to "Disguise" the Star Wars icons...note the horns on Vader's head, the graphic simplification of the Death Star, and the new costume on the lightsaber-weilding Luke Skywalker.

Star Attack
Also notice the first two letters of the logo. The S and T have been seperated by what appears to be a magic-marker drawn line. The edging on the letters is interupted, showing this was a last minute change. This is how the card was printed, however. I guess the linked ST seen in the Star Wars logo was too close to the real thing. ;)

The toys themselves don't have anything to do with Star Wars. They're ripped off from other properties all together!

Mutant The first figure is taken almost verbatum from the Universal Pictures property "This Island Earth" (Also the subject of Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie!) This is the alien Mutant (Mu-Tant?) that served as the lame sci-fi critter in the movie.

The other figure I don't recognize, just a generic alien.

UPDATE!

Turns out the alien isn't from "This Island Earth" at all! He's from the 1960's Line of Colorform Aliens! Here's an exerpt from the expert eMail I received:

Almost everything colorforms put out were those vinyl-clingies things. However they produced at least one series of THE OUTER SPACE MEN that came out in 1968-70. They were released at the same time as Mattel's Major Matt Mason and thus were roughly the same size (5-6") and had the same style of accordian bendie type arms.>

To my knowledge only seven were produced:

  • Alpha 7 (Mars) - smallest, big head, helmet on original
  • Electron + (Pluto) - robot like, square body with round circle
  • Xodiac (Saturn) - space suit, circle on upper chest, alien head
  • Orbitron (Uranus) - long arms, all alien, exposed brain? (This is the one pictured above)
  • Commander Comet (Venus) - human with wings **
  • Colossus Rex (Jupiter) - alien, gill like ears, skeletal crest
  • Astro-Nautilus (Neptune)- four arms, squid like ***
** Copies sometimes have removable wings, sometimes solid wings

*** This is the one they did not copy

On the original toys some came with a helmet which is not molded on the copies. Also the weapons match those that came with the figures but with the figures they were loose and not molded into the figure.

That likely gives you more about this series than you ever wanted to know.

All this great information came from Kevin - Thanks!!!

The first of the three ships is quickly recognizable as the Space Shuttle.(!) The other two ships are from the movie/series "Thunderbirds are Go!" - a super-marionation film from the sixties.

There is another set of ships in the Star Attacks line. Photos can be found at Rob Godwin's Bootleg Page.

Overall this is a fairly competent Class Three bootleg. The tie-ins to Star Wars are limited to the packaging, but that doesn't limit the fun of the figures any.
