This is not a bootleg I've seen in person, although I did try and win it on eBay.

This is a vintage bootleg - it came out in the late 1970s / early 1980s, just as Star Wars was cresting in popularity.

This is a toy designed to trick kids into learning something - and it relied upon the stylings of R2-D2 to do it. Even the name of the toy is similar - StaR-2.

It appears to have been similar in desing to Operation - a metal probe was used to close a circut and activate the toy with either a "good" or "bad" response.

The package art shows that Star-2 (the "Loveable Teaching Robot") focused on four areas of learning:

Refill packs of new questions were also available, as shown in the picture below.

Looking at the package art and the enclosed toy, there may have been variaions on this - the box clearly shows a Blue/White toy (more closely matching the Lucas vision), while the actual toy is a garish orange.

Still, there's no mistaking that domed head and patern of panels.
