With the increase in shielding, as well as improved inertial dampening, the pilot can dispense with all of the safety gear normally associated with piloting a snub fighter.

The shield improvements also allow for a thinner wall between the astromech and the cockpit. This allows the 'Mech to access more of the vital controls of the craft in the case of damage or pilot blood alcohol levels exceeding tolerances.

The astromech required for an XR-Wing is of a higher caliber than the standard R2 astromech used by the standard X-Wing. The upgraded model, the FU, is designed exclusively to interface with the XR's touchy intake systems.

As seen in the photo below, the FU matches the XR's styling by being fitted with lavish chrome accents.

The FU also serves as a flotation device in the event of a water landing.
