Episode 248

Read the comic here.

My wife was proof-reading the strip last night when she noticed.

"That's a huge phone!"

I blame LEGO for never producing a phone accessory correctly in scale with their mini-figures. Of course, these days a 1x1 black tile could double for a cell phone with reasonably accuracy. But if you want Old School Rotary Action, you've got to go with the pre-printed 1x1 slope and the giant handset. You just gotta.

I'm not terribly pleased with Mary Sue's line of "Did anyone notice that phone being there before now?" I needed to address the fact that this mysterious phone just appeared, and a mere "where'd the phone come from?" didn't seem to have the right weight to it. Eh, tomorrow this strip will be in the archives and I can move past it.

But if anyone has a suggestion as to a better line, post it here and I'll consider correcting the strip.

How about this...

Mary Sue: "Does anyone else see the irony of using matter transmission to send us a rotary phone?"

Whiskey: "Okay, so I was wrong. Doyle's only out of good ideas."

Mary Sue: Gah! Giant, mysteriously-appearing phone!

Whiskey: It's like Healy's writing the strips now...

Yeah, yeah, so you don't like the giant phone.

That's okay - it's just a plot device to move things along after Whiskey's Rebellion.

I Must admit, the GIANT PHONE is a bit, erm... giant.

It's not that I don't like it, i just don't think it's entirely suitable for a strip set in the modern ages.

It would be more suited for a '30s-'60s era strip like my webcomic

This will be made a bit more explicitly clear in tomorrow's strip, but for those of you who didn't catch the "Neo" thing, I'm making references to the film "The Matrix" at this point.

In that film, the phones the heroes use to communicate (the "land lines", not cell phones) are all old, giant rotary models.

And, as I pointed out, LEGO doesn't really make a phone to-scale with the minis at this point. So I'm working with what I got.

Just be thankful I didn't go with a REALLY giant phone (human scale).

OKay...

I kinda gettit now...

I was wondering why he/she said Neo...

I think a Morpheus character would be cool...

BTW, don't you have work to go to, Chris?

P.S. If I were you, I'd get some rotten fruit and eggs out to lob at those pesky kids. I know, I'm evil, aren't I :p
