Class of Bootleg | Class 1 - Exact Duplicate |
Class Notes: | Package design modification on Back of card, still using original photos |
Bootleg Source: | Kenner 1990's Power of the Force Line |
Bootleg Rating: | (Five out of five stars) |
Sightings: | All over the world! Germany, Mexico, Australia, Canada, and Indonesia, just to name a few! No sightings in the USA yet - probably due to Lucasfilm watching for them. |
Vintage: | Winter 1997 / Spring 1998 |
The current (1990's) line of Star Wars figures has been bootlegged before. The Galaxy Cops figures have used the molds from the Darth Vader and Stormtrooper, for example. But this line of Class 1 bootlegs takes the cake. Every figure Kenner has put out has shown up as a bootleg. Even figures that were never released as carded indivduals, like the Swoop Trooper, have been found.
There are several "Standard" backboards that have been used:
The back of the green stripe cards closely matches the US version, except that the character bio area has been replaced with a "Hollywood Squares" of other Star Wars Characters.
The Red stripe card features art lifted from the promotional art for the 1970's Star Wars theatrical release. Along the bottom of the card is the 1st issue character list with photos - Stormtrooper, Vader, Han, Luke, Chewie, R2, Ben, 3PO, and Leia. Just above the photo is the legend "COLLECT THEM ALL"

Ben Kenobi |
The Ben Kenobi bootleg comes with a black plastic lightsaber with no painted details. Ben's outer robe is black with white and brown highlights. What makes this bootleg interesting to me is Ben's face. Instead of the full beard that Alec Guiness had in Star Wars, this figure sports a C. Everett Coop beard-without-a-mustache look. |
Princess Leia |
The Princess Leia bootleg comes with two guns, a cape, and a semi-removeable skirt. I say semi-removeable as the skirk clips into the center of the figure. |
Jawas |
The Jawas come in a 2-Pack like their legal counterparts. They lack the light-pipe that give them their "Glowing Eye" feature, however. Instead they have bright yellow paint for eyes, as shown in the close-up above. |
Greedo |
Greedo is pretty un-remarkable. His head looks a little mushed, but he's otherwise very similar to the Kenner version. |
Tusken Raider |
The Sandperson comes with a Gaderffi Stick cast in black plastic with silver highlights. The over-coat has suffered in the translation and now has a mushy-look to it. The left hand is the "Open" variety. |
Sandtrooper |
The muddy paint on these bootlegs almost works for the Sandtrooper. Brown paint has been liberally splattered all over the figure. The backpack has white and blue highlights on it. |
R5-D4 |
R5 is almost identical to the Kenner version. The only external difrences are that the missile and switch (hook-version) are now cast in white plastic, and that the brown paint-overspray has been replaced with silver splashes. |
2-1B |
The most obvious difference between the bootleg and legal version is that clear center section of the droid has been replaced with white plastic. |
Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper Disguise |
That's not poor photography (for a change) on the right. Luke's features are almost not present in the bootleg. Due to the choice of backboards for the line, this is the only Bootleg with a correct card! |
Luke in Hoth Gear |
Hoth-Gear Luke comes with a black lightsaber with a silver-highlighted handle, and a pistol. Notice how Luke's head is poorly inserted into the neck joint. |
Luke in Imperial Disguise |
Check out the extreme cross-eyed expression! |
Leia in Bounty Hunter Disguise |
Another goofy expression, but otherise a reasonable copy. |
