Set Review: 8158 Speed Racer and Snake Oiler

As promised, here's my review of one of the new Speed Racer sets: 8158: Speed Racer and Snake Oiler.

In my review, I talk about how this set seems to have been stripped down to reach the $20 price point. Has anyone else picked up this set yet? I'm curious if others ended up with the same impressions that I did.

Would another 50 parts have changed the feel and look of this set enough to justify a higher price? Too bad I have a contest underway already. I'm tempted to do a "no prize" contest to see who can "Fix the Mach 5 in 50 bricks or less". I have a few of those Toa Jallers left, after all...

I got that set yesterday.
I like it very much, but the gaps are annoying.
So I tried to fill them up with a plate, but it looked even more annoying.
Furthermore, maybe I'll use his shirt the blue shirt for my Lego man.

The gaps by the windshield are there to let the front tires turn, unless I miss my guess. I'm going to try and correct things by building up the hood area by one plate - raising the windshield and allowing for some slope tiles to smooth out the front of the hood. That'll also give me another plate worth of depth to try and finish out the interior...

a quick contest idea, doyle. what if you took an impulse set (like 4838 mini vehicles) and give prizes for the best alternate model, but you can only use pieces from that set.

cool huh?

You said you were missing a part and that you were grumpy about it. Well, grump no more because at lego.com, yes lego.com there is a area in costumer support where you can get FREE replacement parts. I have tried this and it is truly FREE!

It is in customer service and in a link-bar on the top, it says replacement parts, building instructions and contact us.

Thanks for the tips, gang - I did know about the replacement/missing part option, but I was only missing a 1x2 white plate - of which I have a ton sitting in a drawer. Hardly seems worth the trouble this time.

Zack, sorry to hear about the crushed helmet! That's gotta suck hard.

I just read a review about this set on the Dutch Lowlug website, and the author discovered that the box art is flawed: in order to make it look speedier, they took the legs off the minifig for the box art picture.
Even if you can't read Dutch, look at the pictures that demonstrate it:
