Photo Review: Luke's Landspeeder

Photo Review of LEGO set 8092 - Luke's Landspeeder

This one's been out for a while, but I just now got my sets from shop@home. (Limited Edition stuff makes me SO grumpy...)

traffic stop 2

There's one huge selling point for this set - minifigure updates to the classic New Hope cast. I broke out the "vintage 2000" figures for comparison photos. Click through for all the fun on Flickr.

Set Photos - 20014 March/April Brickmaster 4x4

I received my March/April Brickmaster promo set in the mail yesterday.

20014 Brickmaster Mini 4x4 set

It's decidedly meh. No new parts, no clever building techniques...just a pretty average creator set.

Photos are up at my Flickr Stream...click through to check out the set for yourself!

LEGO Set Photo Review: Duplo Farm Animal Mystery!

Many in the LEGO community are excited about the upcoming "Mystery Mini-Figure" collectible sets. I know I am.

But did you know LEGO is already testing out a Mystery Assortment? It's true! And it's DUPLO!

30060 Duplo Easter Impulse - Front
30060 DUPLO Easter Impulse

Take a gander at this Spring/Easter Impulse set. You get three DUPLO bricks (two yellow, one green) and one of five mystery characters.

Yeah. Four pieces.

For three bucks.

Beyond the silly price point, there's another fatal flaw with this set. The figure is supposed to be a mystery, right? Well, if you flip over the package....

30060 Duplo Easter Impulse - calf

...You can see what's inside. This bag, for example, has the calf in it. (Click to enbiggen)

I suppose this was done to keep people from ripping open the bags to make sure their kids get a full set...but at that point, why not just make bags for each animal?

It's a puzzlement.

The final mystery, though? What a farm animal is supposed to do with three DUPLO blocks.

Here's my solution:

Anyway, if you want to see more photos, the full Flickr set is here.

LEGO Set Photo Reviews

I stopped at Target last night and they had stocked their Easter Impulse Item row - and that means new LEGO mini-sets!

There were two new CITY sets, two Star Wars Mini-Ships, and an interesting DUPLO mystery bag.

I decided I wanted a giant Buzz head to go with my mini-fig scaled one. When I stopped by TRU this afternoon, they were in the process of marking up this set from $26.99 to $29.99. It looked like most of the Toy Story sets were getting price increases. (ANOTHER $3-$5 per set, over the already inflated prices!)

Oh, TRU, there's a reason I don't shop at your store 90% of the year. If it weren't for the addict in me needing these new sets ASAP, I'd rather give my money to any of your competitors.

LEGO Photo Review: 8511 - ChromaStone

I have never been more disappointed in a LEGO set in my life. I knew the Ben-10 line was going to suck...but I had no idea I'd be paying over a dollar a part for a super-low quality Bionicle knock-off build.

Avoid the Ben-10 line like the plague. If we're lucky, the line will tank quickly and LEGO will move on to bigger and better things.

More Bionicle Stars Photo Reviews

Part of my Black Friday shopping was to stop at Toys R Us at 2:30 in the morning. They didn't have much of anything new (beyond the 2010 leaks I've already reviewed) so I consoled myself by picking up two more of the Bionicle Stars canisters. Since this is the last wave of Bionicle (LEGO has discontinued the theme) I figured I'd pick up the white and black offerings - the two colors I'd usually buy from each wave anyway.

I also picked up a couple of earlier 2009 sets while out shopping, but I don't know how much interest there'd be in my reviewing those. I should probably work on getting ahead on the comic instead...

Yes, Even more set reivews

I stopped at TRU on the way home, hoping to find new Atlantis sets. No go there, but they did have a couple of other items back in stock.

And! Didja hear? The Bionicle Stars line is IT. LEGO has discontinued the theme after these six figures. I have mixed feelings about that...particularly since the replacement theme is kicking off with the less-than-amazing Ben 10 theme.

New Set Reviews on Flickr

While you're waiting for today's comic, take a bit and explore some of the new 2010 sets I found at Toys R Us in Troy, Michigan today. I've taken a bunch of photos and posted them out to my Flickr photostream.

Also of note, they were handing out LEGO Santa Mini-fig keychains with a $5 off $20 LEGO purchase coupons at the check out lanes. Don't know if that's a chain-wide promotion or not. The coupons expire on 11/21/09.

Jango Fett Pen - with Chromed elements

I was at Toys R Us last night picking up my latest Bricktober promotional brick when I spotted something unusual mixed in with the Star Wars figures.

Most of you are familiar with my facination with chromed LEGO products - imagine my surprise when I spotted a $5 LEGO pen set incorporating a Jango Fett minifigure...with a chrome helmet/backpack!

jango pen

Although identical in scale, this is NOT a typical LEGO mini-figure. In fact, if I hadn't bought it at Toys R Us, and removed it from LEGO branded packaging, I would have sworn it was a bootleg. Super cheap plastic, one-peice legs, poor interlocking on the parts, and a general feel of "crap". But...hey! Chrome helmet!

Yes, you can swap out the chrome for the existing Jango Fett helmet if you don't mind a giant hole in the top.

Click through to my Flickr Stream for many more photos, including several comparison shots with the classic Jango Fett mini.
